Risk Assessment for set making and filming

 Risk when creating our jazz club set:

The major issue that worries me when creating our jazz club set is that the room is that it might come across poorly. For example, as the set, so far, is fairly minimalistic, other than the wall and the stage, when showing shots of the people sitting at the tables drinking, the audience might be able to see an empty recording studio in the background of the shot. Similar to the previous issue, if we do not have a good spread of tables in the studio room, it might look like a parody set rather than a realistic Jazz club. One other issue is that it might be quite hard to manoeuvre the camera during tracking and panning shots of the band members walking as we have to film in-between tables to keep a realistic, cramped atmosphere.

Risk when creating our garage:

When creating our garage band set, the biggest hassle would be collecting a massive inventory of junk to make a realistic clattered garage. We need numerous miscellaneous items such as boxes, posters, bottles, old table and sofa, washing machine and so on...

Risks on film day:

On the shoot day, we have decided to begin filming the garage first as 1- it is the most detailed set and can be easily be set up the day before hand to save time, 2- if we a pressured for time we can shoot the entire song in the garage rather than risk changing the set and not having enough footage to complete the music video when editing.

Set Design meeting

 How did the meeting go?

We had our design meeting on Monday the 11th of October. In general, the meeting went quite well with no major concerns or impossibilities brought up. We talked about the general design of the set and the mood/ atmosphere we wanted to create. We told the set designer, Fran, about our jazz club set first. We talked about how we wanted the backdrop to be black with classic red show curtains drooped across it to have the iconic 1920's jazz image. In addition to this, we showed her some images we got from Pinterest of stereotypical Jazz club walls that had lots of framed posters, signatures and sings hung up against a brick wall or darker colours e.g. blue, dark red. Fran also liked our idea of the 4 tables with white cloth with bottles or classes as audience members watch the band perform as it would create a nice classy atmosphere. Furthermore, Fran pointed out to us we won't need to worry about painting the set as most of the colour will come from the smoke/ haze carrying the colours of the lighting across the set. We then discussed our more detailed and clattered set- the garage. After we showed Luke and Fran some photos of the kind of look we were going for, they recommended we draw some ideas of the amount of props we want on set such as boxes, bottles, skateboards etc... to get an idea of how much stuff we would need to borrow, purchase or bring from home. Fran also came up with the idea of having sound proof foam on the garage wall instead of painting a brick layer over the top to save us time whilst keeping the mediocre, novice look of the bands rehearsal room. My group agreed to generate a list of the exact amount of props we will need before the next time we meet her and to get a specific image we would like her to replicate and expand on. In general, Fran really liked the ideas of a jazz club and converted band room as it is only 2 sets and both create very different performance atmospheres for the music video.

Casting and auditions

 We cast auditions/ practice shots for our music video. The band members performed their instruments to the camera so we could get an idea of their on screen personality. The singer performed really well and conveyed a charismatic and cheeky character. The drummer seemed shy at first but then continued to play well with the music and has a good 'rock look'. The base guitarist played his instrument very well and eventually got into the rhythm of the music.
