pre-production to shoot

2 weeks before the shoot:

James and I drew a sketch of both the sets prior to our meeting with Fran, the set designer. We drew the garage set, marking where we would want the instruments, posters and general junk like boxes, old chairs and duvets etc... After this, we went onto Pinterest and got some example images and highlighted specific parts of the photo to help Fran get an ideal atmosphere we wanted to make. The sketch of the jazz club showed where the tables would be in relation to the stage and how we wanted the curtain drooped across the back of the set as well as the posters and side wall lights on the left flat. We also got images from Pinterest and showed Fran a photo of a brick wall with framed posters and wall lights which we mimicked when making our set.

Week ending up to the shoot:

My group and I created a group chat on snapchat to stay in contact over half term and organise props. For instance, we used the props list we had created in class and one through all of the props we needed to gather. It was my job to collect ash trays, bottles and cans, general junk, glasses and anything else that could just fill up the set. Fin sorted out the posters for the garage set and James brought in vases and board games for the jazz club and garage. Beau found table cloths for us to use on the tables in the jazz club. I frequently contacted the band members to let them know what costume we would like them to wear and also asked for the sizes and measurements. After this, I emailed Elizabeth to obtain 2 black suits and 2 white suits for the band during the jazz club scene. I also arranged 2 band rehearsals on Tuesday and Wednesday to practice the song and see if there were any mistakes we would need to help the musicians correct before film day.

 The day before the shoot:

The day before our shoot day we worked with Fran organising our set and designing it. Firstly, we gathered all of our props out of the storage tent such as wall flats, amps, arm chairs, duvets, sound-proofing etc... and put it all into the studio. After Chris finished setting up the overhead lights on the support bars, we moved out props onto set and began building. We put the flat at a right angle to the breeze block wall and stuck up lots of sound-proof foam, egg boxes and posters onto the walls. Then we started to put the amps, instruments, furniture and smaller objects e.h. board games, bottles and cans, onto the set. When all of the set was finished we started to look at certain sections of the set to see which parts were more detailed than the others. We realised that the right hand side of the set was much more detailed and messy than the left hand side, so at the end of the day I went home and collected junk from my garage such as football boots, skateboards etc...
